The Descendants of Abraham Field (1635-1674) of Westmoreland County, Virginia
Our principal interest is the FIELD family which traditionally descends from HUBERTUS
DE LA FELD (1030-1092) of Alsace-Lorraine. He immigrated to
England at the time of William the Conqueror (about 1066).1 The first immigrant of our line to reach
the New World is thought to be HENRY FIELD (1611-) son of JOHN FIELD,
JR. (1559-) of Boston, Lincolnshire, England.2 HENRY arrived in
the New World, in 1635 on the ship Expectation.3 However, we consider ABRAHAM FIELD (1636-1674) of Westmoreland County, Virginia, to be the earliest ancestor of our branch of the family. He is the first of our line we can document. He is often stated to be the son of HENRY the immigrant. No one has ever found verifiable documentation of this relationship.
This branch of the FIELD family remained in
Virginia (Westmoreland and Culpeper Counties) for some time but eventually moved to Kentucky.4 ABRAHAM FIELD(1744-1822) and his family settled in Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1784. His son KEEN
(-1815) moved on to Gibson County, Indiana, sometime around 1799.5 Two of Keen's brothers, JOSEPH and REUBIN FIELD, were members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1803-1806.6
Our branch of the family remained in Gibson County, Indiana, as farmers and land
owners until GEORGE EMERY FIELD, (1849-1915) moved north to
Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, in the late 1800's. In 1945, HOWARD ALLEN
FIELD (1911-1988) moved his family to California (our family). Many descendants have remained in Indiana but the family has spread to Michigan, Montana, Washington, Kansas, Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky, Florida, Ohio, Wisconson, Texas and Oklahoma.
If any of your FIELD ancestors were from these areas or connect to any of the people
of these lines we might be able to help you. While we are interested in being in contact
with all FIELD relatives, we are anxious to be in contact with descendants of KEEN FIELD and ANNA LEWIS, who immigrated to Gibson County, Indiana.
