John Field (1726-1774) & Anna Rogers Clark Culpeper County Virginia

1. Col. John4 Field (Abraham*3, Daniel*2, Abraham*1)1,2 was born 1726 in Culpeper County, Virginia3, and died 10 October 1774 in the Battle of Point Pleasant, Virginia (now West Virginia)4. He married Anna Rogers Clark5 1748. She died Bef. March 1804 in Bourbon County, Kentucky6.

Notes for Col. John Field:

Frederick C. Pierce in his Field Genealogy (Chicago: Hammond Press, 1901) says that Col. John Field married Anna Rogers Clark the sister of George Rogers Clark. Col. John Field did marry someone named Ann or Anna, perhaps even an Anna Clark, but not the sister of George Rogers Clark. George's sister married Owen Gwathmey and her age does not fit the birth dates of the children of Col. John Field. Anna Rogers Clark was born 14 July 1755 and married Owen Gwathmey on 20 October 1773 when she was 22 year old. Owen Gwathmey survived her by 8 years. They are both burried in the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. (Dorman, John F., "Descendants of Ann Clark wife of Owen Gwathmey" in Genealogies of Kentucky Families, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1981,pg. 394)

"John Field was Lt. under George Washington in Braddock's Campaign, and commanded the Virginia Troops at the Battle of Point Pleasant, on the Ohio River for which his heirs were granted, by Lord Halifax, a large tract of now in Bourbon County, Kentucky." (McAllister, Edward N. and Annabelle C. McAllister, Estes Genealogy: Estes Families of old Clay County, Missouri. Their Ancestors and Descendants, 1972)

-1761-1765 Represented Culpeper County in the House of Burgesses.

-Oct. 1765 Represented Culpeper County in the House of Burgesses.

(source: Culpeper Scrapbook, Culpeper Town and County Library, Culpeper, Virginia.)

-Appleman says his birth was in 1720.

"Field had taken cover behind a large tree and was trying to locate an Indian who was talking to him from cover on his left. While Field was thus diverted, two other Indians in a mass of fallen trees on his right shot him dead" (Appleman, Roy E., "Joseph and Reuben Field, Kentucky Frontiersmen of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and Their Father, Abraham", In Genealogies of Kentucky Families, Genealogical Pub. Co., Inc. Baltimore, 1981, pg. 486, 487)
